Public Service Announcement - Meewasin Pelican Watch 2010 - News Advisory Event to Announce Winners

The event to announce the winners of the Meewasin Pelican Watch Contest 2010 will be Wednesday, June 2nd, 10:00 am, on the Realty Executives Boardwalk at the weir. (Note: If the weather is inclement it will be at North Park Wilson School, 1505, 9th Avenue North).The 30 minute program will include awarding of this year’s prizes to winners of the 2850 entrants who answered the question: “When will the first pelican as recorded by our official observers from the Saskatoon Nature Society land between the CPR Bridge and the weir?”
Representatives from Meewasin, the contest sponsors and the Saskatoon Nature Society will present the awards. A number of schools will be represented by classrooms of students with award winners enrolled in their classrooms.
Saskatoon residents have special visitors each summer. April through October, pelicans gather by the weir to fish. These birds, once an endangered species, have been a beautiful sight on the South Saskatchewan River since the late 1970s. For Saskatoon residents their arrival is a harbinger of spring. Prizes include a mountain bike courtesy of Realty Executives Saskatoon, an overnight stay for two in the White Pelican Bed & Breakfast, a grocery certificate from Pelican Market, Binoculars from Don’s Photo Shop, a prize package from Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Saskatchewan, an ice cream party for a school courtesy of Homestead Ice Cream, an engraved brick at the Rotary International Peace Plaza, a deciduous tree courtesy of Meewasin Plant-A-Tree program, five wildlife watching packages, a gift certificate to the Meewasin Gift Shop and a Meewasin interpretive canoe tour charter for nine.
This is the 15th year of the Meewasin Pelican Watch Contest. This year’s arrival time was Friday, April 16th 2010 at 5:32 pm. The earliest the pelican has arrived in the past 15 years was last year April 6th at 4:35 p.m. The latest the pelican has arrived in the past 15 years was April 18, 2003 at 4:25 pm.
