Water As A Focus
To achieve its mission, Meewasin has to take into account the health of the entire Saskatchewan River basin, emphasizing stewardship by developing Partners FOR the Saskatchewan River Basin in 1993.
PFSRB is a non-profit multi-province organization committed to increasing stewardship throughout the river basin. It emphasizes stewardship by developing:
- Public awareness and education tools to teach the importance of the basin's biodiversity;
- Ongoing partnerships and networks of organizations that cross political and sectoral boundaries; and,
- Action projects in which people can participate.
By connecting over 100 partner organizations from Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, PFSRB is responsible for developing a range of stewardship programs dedicated to protecting the river basin. These include:
- An annual conference on integrated watershed management;
- The Water Watchdog Program;
- The Yellow Fish Road Program; and,
- Saskatchewan 's first EcoCanoe Tour and guidebook.
In 1996, Partners FOR the Saskatchewan River Basin received the National Healthy Environmental Award from Environment Canada. Two years later, the Meewasin Stewardship Program and Partners FOR the Saskatchewan River Basin Stewardship Program won the national Elaine Burke Memorial Award for community achievement and active living in the environment.
